Happy Thanksgiving 2016 From my Home to Yours!

(These are a few creations I have made for Thanksgiving. The key is using mostly fall natural foliage to get the best results.)

From my Home to yours, I wish each and every one of you a very Happy Thanksgiving. May it be truly blessed and a memorable one surrounded by all of your special loved ones. I love this time of year, just the word Thanksgiving makes me feel all warm inside.  I look forward to this every year sharing my home and cooking some of my favorite traditional homemade recipes, while creating a warm and cozy atmosphere for the occasion. This is my gift I love to share and give to my family and friends.

Spring and summer overall is my time of year. But there’s just something extra special when fall arrives. It’s the chill in the air with the leaves starting to change an array of beautiful colors, and enjoying the scenery of the mountain landscape which is my favorite to stare out at, and then Thanksgiving arrives. The word Thanksgiving can be broken down into so many meanings. Every day we can find something we can be thankful for. I never let those moments go by without saying “Thank you” or I am so thankful for….. It’s something just energizing about being thankful, especially expressing it to someone else letting them know how much you appreciate them. It defiantly puts a smile on ones face. It’s such a selfless and contagious act and freeing when expressed making both the giver and the receiver just feel good. I believe it’s very gratifying when we can help others by giving back of ourselves if it’s a gift of our resources, or just time. This is a gift we can enjoy and do all year.

So hear it goes….I want to say thank you to each and everyone one you. I truly appreciate working with you this year, and the ones I have worked with for many years that keep coming back. This puts a smile on my face. I am so thankful for your loyalty and your trust allowing me to come into your homes to create a special and beautiful haven that you can share with others, and treasure for yourselves and with your family.  May you have a blessed and glorious Holiday Season!

God bless you!

As we say each year, we can’t believe the Holidays are already upon us. In the last few years I started to try and make it a point for myself to take in as much of each moment as possible hoping the time will move a bit more slowly. It’s great for a while until summer ends and the Holidays are already here. We see around us moments, ones experiencing the stress and the rush of making those traditional commitments being here and there. It can overtake one in this manner, and then it becomes more of a job then the feeling of celebration of togetherness. For some we have had to say good bye to the ones we love, which makes our Holidays even more difficult. I can say I know what this experience feels like. My heart truly goes out to you in this time. Looking back this year, I am just so thankful for life and the life I have been able to experience with other’s and cherish the times and moments we can’t get back. Thankfulness has a strong presence; it wards out fear, brings peace, love, and gives us hope with a new perspective on life.

My hope for you all is to enjoy the Holidays as another opportunity to be thankful and making memories, experiencing love, joy, and togetherness and looking back on those cherished moments. Whatever life brings us during the year, I have found, “We have to make Change in order to see Change” Wow, so true, and so thankful for the choices we all can create. In closing I want to say how thankful I am for each and every one of you in areas you have touched my life, and for that as always I am grateful girl. May your Holiday be filled with new blessed memories, and  thankfulness?

2014 Charlottesville VA Design House Follow-Up

July 7, 2014 by Cheryl

Hope each of you have enjoyed a wonderful spring and summer this far!  It’s been a busy month since the Show house ended late May. I have been playing catch up on projects for my wonderful clients who had waited patiently for me. They were all excited for me participating in such a great event. I want to say many thanks to a lot of you who came out to cheer me on. I loved seeing you! I also appreciate all the encouragement from others who were not able to make it, it means a lot.

The Design House Committee said this was their best year yet for showcasing a home. Even a lot of designers who have participated for several years said the same thing. I do hope this was the best year in raising funds for Shelter for Help in Emergency. This year was different; they had created a beautiful gift shop on the premises, also serving special foods to enjoy under a beautiful white tent facing the Garden. There were many seminars on great topics to learn from. What I enjoyed and remembered the most was meeting such great people and building friendships with the Design House, and ones with the Shelter, along with some wonderful designers. They really knew how to make a girl out-of-town feel right at home…. and that they did. We made a great team helping each other if needed, and also the volunteers were just amazing. Some of the volunteers were contractors, electricians, painters who jumped in freely to give a hand. Believe me they did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. I look forward to our continued friendships. Other exciting events took place. There were a couple of local news channels where I had the opportunity to be interviewed, among a few other designers. I always believe when things happen, nothing is for nothing even in the simplest moments, which turn out to be the best ones.

As I promised I wanted to share a follow-up on the Traditional Guest room retreat I designed with all of its finished custom touches. I received tons of raving remarks when ones entered my room. Thanks to John Magor with John Magor Photography for such beautiful detailed photos. The photo’s are now up, Please click above on this top page Portfolio, and click on Design House 2014. Looking at the photos, keep in mind the walls were not only painted by my professional painter but also by a decorative artist. Diane Williams with Art to di For, captured my vision right on in how I explained the way I wanted the walls to look. As the saying goes, if these walls could talk, and they did, they loved it!  She also hand painted the ceilings with a stencil design and a decorative border that was in picked from the custom drapery. The drapery hardware was also hand painted, and the 3 paneled mirrored screen which is mine now, thank you.  Many thanks to Whetstone and Upholstery, Madalyn Hopkins a dear friend who did the custom labor for the soft furnishings, and headboard with my fabric I provided from Duralee’s, Tilton and Fenwick Collection. Again they captured the details I envisioned.I can’t forget Seth Woods with Woods Refinishing and Restoration that hand-made a custom writing desk, and refinished from bare bones an end table and a Chippendale dresser that made many mouths drop. Designer’s market of Richmond, a design show room for the trade only loaned me a chair from Thibaut’s fine furniture collection called “Brentwood”. I like to say a big thank you to Absolute Stone for the granite counter top and vessel sink.  Steve Dash with Method Organized who offered to do a custom closet for me. What a beautiful job he did. Steve is a quality guy who does quality work!  Mary Fender with Frame nation the best frame shop in Richmond did all my custom framing. I and Mary went through old post cards of Charlottesville and had them beautifully framed what an effect it made to the room.  This room was really thought out and designed with a lot of great detail, colors, along with the custom work to make it a retreat for any quest to feel welcomed and rejuvenated. This was a room to be remembered.

Thanks again to you all!!

Much love,

Cheryl Jarvis

Charlottesville Va Design House 2014

Charlottesville VA Design House 2014
Charlottesville VA Design House 2014 5th year. 1975 Old Mill Road, Charlottesville Va 22901
Design House Tours

Hi Everyone,

Thank goodness we can say good bye to winter finally, and hello Spring!  I hope life is treating you well and you’re making great plans for special outings, vacations, and checking off your list for those endless yet wonderful indoor and outdoor projects.

I would love for you to take a break and come out to see me this May in Charlottesville VA. I’m happy to say I took the plunge for a great opportunity in participating for the first time in a Design Show house. This is Charlottesville’s 5th year. Love the surrounding areas of Charlottesville with it’s beautiful scenery of rolling hills along the mountains which I find so captivating. Other than the gorgeous views, what helped me decide to want to be a part of the Design House was all the proceeds goes to support Shelter for Help in Emergency. It’s a 34 year organization that helps Women and children, and a small percentage of men who have experienced violence in their homes. They give these family’s a safe place while helping them get back on their feet through special programs, pretty amazing isn’t it. What a great way for designers to take part sharing their talents while helping towards a great cause at the same time. To learn more about this organization click this link: https://www.shelterforhelpinemergency.org/

I’ve wanted to participate in a Show House. But,after learning from few designer’s in the past about the cost it kept me held back, and somewhat hesitant. Then this opportunity fell in my lap. It felt right, and it was time…., so I went for it! I have found at this time in my life you have to just jump in and swim and the How’s, meaning (how too’s) will take care of itself. Well with a lot of faith that is exactly what happened. Everything just fell into place with my great team of loyal vendors who I have developed relationships with for years came on board without a thought to help me, a lot of them charging me nothing for labor. What more can I say that I am one blessed girl for their love and support. I’m happy that I will be mentioning a lot of these vendors in the Design House programs. I want to thank my family, friends and clients who have believed in me and my work never doubting and always trusting, this has inspired me.They know who they are, I send much love, and many thanks!

In this Show house, I will be designing the upstairs guest bedroom.I call this the”Traditional Guest bed room Retreat”. This is an older home, so I took a traditional approach that I felt was very appropriate. I’m excited to be using a brand new line of fabrics called Tilton and Fenwick colllection from Duralee. Enjoy the sneak peak preview of photos I’ve shared. I will be doing a follow up blog letting you know the success of this event! I can’t give  away to many details you will have to come and see for yourself!

~Moving forward in making your house your home~

February 7, 2013 by Cheryl

Turning your house into a HomeIn my recent blog “2013 Give your home a new meaning” I touched on some key ingredients in taking steps in moving you forward in making  your house your home. If you have not read it, I encourage you to.  I’m excited to share some great information with you, so let’s get started….Whatever room, or rooms you’re looking to begin your project, there are important questions you need to ask yourself before starting. I could go on with a big list, but one could find it a bit overwhelming., so I want to take a simpler approach. Remember it is a process. I will take these baby steps with you as I walk you through.  Let’s start off with a few important basics around function, color, and, mood. Here are some questions that are very helpful when discovering each of these areas:

~ What is the sole purpose and function of this room? (How do I want this room to work?)

~ How do I want this space to feel? (This would be the mood of the room)

~ What colors do I like?                                                                                                      Colors

~ How do the colors I like make me feel?

~ What main color would I like possibly for my walls?

~ What other colors I would like to use as accents?

~ What furnishings do I need to change and keep?

The idea is to really answer each question honestly in order to create the space that makes it feel like home. Once the answers are down on paper then things just start coming together in these areas on function, color, and mood. Working closely with a designer who truly understands and studies the clients taste, likes and dislikes can really be helpful in this arena. I have helped many clients achieve just this, which in turns makes me feel great!

Let’s start off first talking about function. Again function is how the space is to work for one’s purpose. Let me share a few extra examples one may need to ask, say it’s a family room. Is this room mostly for conversation only, or T.V. entertainment? Do I want a corner to read quietly in? Do I want to entertain more guests by increasing some extra seating? Does the lighting need improving? Everyone’s needs are different, and so will be the questions.

color wheel

On to color, one of my favorites! Experimenting with color is the fun part! Colors really help set the mood for a space. Some other key questions to ask when selecting the right colors. Do I want warm colors for coziness, or lighter colors for an airy lighter look? How could I incorporate my accent colors and where? I would encourage to do paint samples on boards, and preferably not on walls. The reasoning behind this is that the walls do not move with the light. Sample boards can be moved around the space seeing the different variances. Each wall can give off different color hues depending on lighting. It’s equally important looking at the color in the evening. If you like the way it looks in the day and evening, you have a winner!

Last but not least, now we have the mood of the room. Earlier I mentioned about the feeling a room gives and has. It speaks in its own silent way with comfort, relaxation, tranquility, and peace. Mood evokes the emotion, again that feeling you have and want to achieve in this space. The mood comes forth around color, and how the room functions with it’s furnishings. Note, lighting is the key in helping the room functioning. It enhances its surroundings with furnishings, art, and accessories. The mood of the room may be making it a warm look for coziness and more welcoming, but yet comfortable for family and quest. If it’s a tranquil feeling one is drawn to for their space, then look at the colors that fit that feeling. In a tranquil space it showcases on the simplicity of the space with its clean lines, along with an airy feel of freshness and color. Starting on these 3 basic areas covers a lot in getting you on track to start feeling great in your new space. Look for my up coming blog on furthering our steps to create that perfect wonderful space that we all can call home!

Happy decorating and have fun getting started in the right direction!

How one can use not 3 but many patterns of fabrics in one space!

June 8, 2012 by Cheryl

Pinned Image

Fear not  for those of you  who love many patterns but scared to use them, must read on….

What a great introduction from Sanderson Fabrics and Wallpapers showing their SS12 collecton and how one can use many beautiful and eye popping colorful patterns in one room. Some of us have heard the 3 pattern only rule be used in a space. Well that’s just not true. I’ve told many of my clients, yes, yes and yes we can use array of patterns together to form a beautiful room. When the space is well thought out and designed correctly, and with balancing of colors, patterns, and textures you too can create a beautiful designed room that represents who you are and what you love. Next when your out buying the sofa you love, think about how you want that displayed in your room. Take here in the photo for example. The solid sofa plays a great part in being the back drop to display the patterns, large and small used in pillows to give us our pop. Here shown the wallpaper, fully capturing your attention to the walls, they continued to bring the pattern print down by using it in a couple pillows. From there they pulled in other patterns with colors used in pillows to flow so nicely together. Speaking of patterns, stripes is a great pattern to work with in many spaces. Here a displayed rug is shown that plays another huge part in drawing and complimenting other colorful patterns to itself.  Another great idea here shown is the yellow chair. The solid yellow fabric works wonderfully breaking up some of the busyness. By doing this, they were able to pull in a colorful printed patterned chair that works great! This beautifully done room using Sanderson’s colorful fabrics was a great topic to write about. So for all of you that love patterns, but are afraid to use them, well no more. Here’s an excellent example that you can!  Please visit my web site and see how I’ve used colorful patterns and prints that my clients love and apppreciate in their spaces. Happy decorating!

Color in Your Interior Spaces

October 14, 2011 by Cheryl

“Don’t be scared of color be adventurous”

Color a lot at times seems to be an area that many people tend to freeze up and get scared. At least this is what I have experienced from some of my clients when I meet with them for the first time. What I hear most of the time is… I’m not sure what color is right, or what color to pick that’s going to go, and once the color is up, what if I do not like it, then what?? This is just a small fraction of what I have heard over the years from clients. I bet some of you can add to this list on color as well.  Colors come in all shades, and depths. The lighting in your room plays a huge role in what your color will look like, creating certain shades, and tones.
