Charlottesville Design House 2014, Guest Room Renovation

The guest room is an important space in the home. It’s a room that is to welcome the guest, wanting them feel comfortable and right at home being refreshed and leaving inspired. When I first saw this guest room I noticed immediately the wonderful light coming in from the windows which in turn has a beautiful view of the landscaping and garden. I thought what a beautiful view for any quest to admire during their stay. My first impression was to bring in brightness of colors pulling in more light having any guest feeling relaxed and tranquil in this room. The inspiration for color in this room came from a brand new collection of fabrics called Tilton and Fenwick by Duralee. Two New York designers’ collaborated and designed a beautiful line of fabrics that make you smile. I immediately fell in love with the colors in one particular fabric, and knew this what I was going to build my whole color scheme around, and so I did. I couldn’t stop there and had to add more of Tilton and Fenwick’s collection. The richness of the corals, and blue teals, and touches of navy stood out for me. Color is the key source starting in any room; it evokes the emotion creating the mood and atmosphere for the room. I had a decorative artist Art to Di for Diane Williams who has won 5th year in Richmond Magazine best decorative artist. After us going over details, she brought the walls to life along with the beautiful border and stencil design work on the ceilings. Lighting is also an important key element enhancing the colors in the space. In addition to this room was a tiny sink area that was a little bit a challenge and looked really out of place. But with some creativity this little space looks like it belongs now, thanks to Absolute Stone Design for the granite and gorgeous vessel sink. There was another inspirational piece I came across, my luscious head board with its unique design and beautiful fabric making it look like a piece of art. Thanks to Whetstone Upholstery & Interiors for making my headboard and soft treatments. I’m happy to say they did the upholstery work for the recent Lincoln movie by Spielberg. I give many thanks to my great team of quality vendors being experts in their field helped bring my creation to life. In designing this guest room, I needed to utilize every inch of space not only creating a beautiful room, but equally important is making it functional for guest. The wonderful corner mirrored screen helped open up the space even more allowing reflections of light to come in, and guest can use it for a dressing mirror. Every element in the design process to the colors, fabrics, furniture, art work, accessories, and lighting all need to have chemistry, meaning each piece has a sense of belonging together to fit and complete the puzzle. That’s what makes a room great!http://www.shelterforhelpinemergency.org/
